last years to an ever increasing extent to solve mathematical problems,
having a large number of figures at the beginning or end of the calculation.
Besides more extensive work connected with a fundamental modernization of
the analysis and prediction of tides, the following annually recurring work
is to mentioned: interpolation of the hourly ephemerides of the sun, planets
and first point of Aries, for the H'autische Jahrbuch; computation of epheme
rides of fixed stars for the zenith telescope Of the time service which is
still under construction,, and the statistics dealing with monthly ships' “and
goods 1 traffic in the s.ea ports of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland. The latter
statistics will be used by the Bundesverkabrsministerium as basis material
for their work and by the Statistisohe Bundesamt as starting material for the
German statistics of sea transport. It is. further planned to work up oceano
graphical and. later on geomagnetical observations, too.
In compliance With requests made by shipping,, the Hautisehe 5aS.rbUch
•and the Gezeitentafeln could be brought out a few months earlier than in the
last years. The Year-Book 1956 was delivered in May, the Gezeitentafeln.
Volume I and II, in August 1955, Besides the data as hitherto given for the
Atlantic Ocean, for the first time Volume II of the Gezeitentafeln contains
those for - the western part of the Indian. Ocean, further sea areas will be.
included according to requirements. The issue of tables for the whole world,
which would have to comprise several volumes, surpasses present possibilities
Bor the included areas, however, information as complete .as possible is of
fered, especially regarding predictions at Standard Berts, so that the Tables
will be so. handy and reliable as required to-day.
The Atlas*der Sezeitensirome ftir die Bordsee, den Eanal und die briti-
schen Gewasser, the completion of which was delayed by new material, will be
published towards the close of the budgetary year.
In the field of radio navigation, in cooperation'with shipping, aviation
and industry, the G.H.I, endeavoured to fix uniform German technical equiva
lents for English and American definitions of'terms. These endeavours are
still being continued.
The moving of the entire Time Service into the new building housing the
authorities under the auspices of the "Bundesverkehrsministerium", started in
1954, was. completed at the beginning of 195.5 with the reestablishment of the.
most important instruments and apparatuses and with resuming their operation.
In 1955 no changes were made in the transmission of time signals. The
reception of international time signals w.as increased. Monitoring of the
clocks of the Bsderal railways so far carried out,, was extended, on Oct, 1,
1955 to the clocks of the Hamburg underground railways.
In the middle of the year under review designing, and construction of
the photographical zenith telescope could be resumed to a greater extent,
