Summary
Under the impression of the tsunami disaster in the North Indian Ocean in December 2004,
a simulation of the propagation and modification of a wave train with a period of 1800 s across
the North-East Atlantic and the North Sea was carried out as part of the project “Tsunami - a
study regarding the North Sea coast”. The models used for this purpose were two-dimensional
barotropic models. Such models are in operational use at the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic
Agency of Germany (BSH) to forecast external surges of meteorological origin, which normally
have longer periods, and to forecast storm surges at the German North Sea coast. North Sea storm
surges with water levels of 4 to 5 m above NN (German ordnance datum) are annually recurring
events that are monitored by the official forecasting service at the BSH. The period of a tsunamiranges
between that of wind waves and that of the predominantly semidiurnal tide in the North
Sea. The behaviour of a hypothetical tsunami with a varying wave height traversing a wide,
shallow shelf has been simulated using slightly modified models. An analysis of the importance of
dissipation has also been included.
In the North-East Atlantic, the simulations reproduce dynamic features that can be attributed
to the change of propagation velocity with depth. In the North Sea, numerical models used
to forecast storm surges are suitable in principle for simulating the propagation of medium-length
waves almost to the near-shore area as well as their modification by coastal and bottom features
if their grid spacing is adapted to the shorter wave lengths. Direct interaction with tides and storm
surges is weak.
